POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION

Venue:an engineering admission centre

student 1: how much did you score in the entrance exam?
student 2: 100
student1:that's very less. you will have to struggle for the admissions!!
student 2 : yeah..what about u?
student 1: 78/200
student 2: then your condition is more worse
student 1: I need not worry,,I am in the reserved category!!!! fellows like you from the open category are gonna terrorised..ha ah ha ha...

This is a true conversation that took place recently between two engineering aspirants. this is what is happening in our country. We claim that caste discrimination is completely abolished from India. But it isn't. Employment, education, and many other sectors are still under the influence of this social evil. Only difference is that in ancient India, it was the backward castes who were oppressed , whereas in the modern Indian society, the open category..(higher castes) are the ones suffering.

I am not at all against the reservation system..but against the type of reservation. we are almost into the 64th year of independence, and is it still necessary to provide reservation on caste basis?? Most of the backward castes are now developed and their standard of living is not poor as before. If any reservation is to be provided , then why not on the basis of annual income of the family?
The caste system in ancient India was a dreadful disaster. The backward castes were deprived of every opportunities. Maybe that's the reason why Dr. Ambedkar formulated a constitution where the scheduled castes and tribes were given prior importance. But the prime reason behind it was to bridge the gap between the low caste poor men an the rich higher castes.
If we consider the life standard of the so called low castes now, then its much improved. The ones that are still suffering belong to the below poverty level families. They can be considered by reserving them according to the family income..
due to this present system of reservation,,many deserving students are deprived of a chance of studying in good colleges since their seats are allotted to the reserved categories.

guys,if you belong to a reserved category , then you might feel awkward reading this article.
But dont u think this is discrimination ?? Should we allow this to underestimate the calibre and merit of the students??? Isn't it high time that the system change???

The students have to pay high donations to secure a seat in a professional course like MBBS or ENGINEERING,,then whats their mistake if they become corrupt officers in the future??
GUYS.....its high time our country wake up....the youth of our country should learn from the example of vicky and vivek who denied a seat under reservation in the most prestigious college in the country---IIT.( click here to know more.)
so what you think??? What can we do ??

I am too busy to care, but want to do something. Jaago Re and BlogAdda.com are helping me do my bit for the society.

  1. I totally disagree with reservation policy. Economically backward should be given economic assistance and free education till 12th.

We can aspire to open private institutes at par with the ones that govt has.

  2. Hi Revati, very important thought..It has bogged my family for years now. This reservation thing is the sole reason for the brain drain in our country. So many youngsters, who lose a seat they desire in a college to some reservation candidate. They are able to get admission in universities outside and show their abilities even after graduating. They are doing good. But, what of people who couldn't afford to do this. They deserve their seat too!

When ever I see a youngster getting into politics who thinks smart..I hope that maybe he/she will work towards the change we so much need..from this age old constitution that isn't valid in today's society..but, its so disappointing to see them follow the older thought..for the sake of vote bank.

I guess, its left to the common youth to find their own avenue's to do better. Change is the need of today!
I would even say, financial help is always misused too! If you look at the subsidies..that the government provides. It never reaches the people who need it. Brings about huge deficits in the budget.
The only way to prosper is to let merit stand out!

Free education till 12th..I would love to see that in action. But, do you think the poor people, the laborers and such people, who live on daily wages, who depend on each of their kids to bring in their share of wages so, they can buy food for the day, do you think they will send their kids to school?
I don't know how the government can make education mandatory to all kids until 10th at least! They don't even have a record of the kids in the country.
This issue is like a pandora's box to me! Don't know if there is a solution in site. but, we need to start somewhere. Best would be, from addressing this reservation issue and mandatory education for kids.

  3. @renu: free education till 12 th is a great concept..but dont know to what extent it is applicable in our country..
The disagreement about reservation is present in every indian...but hardly anyone openly speaks about it..its like we are encouraging the defects in our system..
its not the resrvation that i am against...infact reservation helps in bridging various gaps in the society...it is the type of reservation that i disagree...why depend on caste to decide upon a persons capability..?? aint the qualities and hardwork that a person possess more significant than his/her caste..??

  4. @gayatri:
    I completely agree..
speakin about change..., how can we expect a change in the system when the system itself is headed by those people who are in the post by virtue of their caste resrvation?
most of the top officers in a govt office either belongs to a category or are very paasive about their responsibility...
and pandora's box atleat had a fairy of hope in it...we are helpless..cant expect any hope in this problem ...
since the last 67 years we are waiting for that hope and it is a pretty long time of silence..ansd some really needs to raise a voice before it turns into a solutionless problem

I completely agree with you reshmi....the reservation system is really bad and if govt really wants to provide reservations than provide according to annual income...
but we should also not forget that Racism and such social evils still rule our country....
this is a incident from my life recently which depicts it all.... http://shettyanirudh.blogspot.com/2011/11/disgusted-about-my-surname-shetty.html
